Projekt Kapitolyo – art with a cause

by Maja Sollegue

As an artist resists confinement, so too does art defy a fixed definition. Yet, it is undeniable that both art and artists are intertwined with society.

Art is not merely a reflection of material reality but an artist’s interpretation of life, shaped by their complex history, present circumstances, and personal convictions. Art, then, becomes a space for articulating the human experience, consequently reshaping the artist. Together, art and the artist share a symbiotic relationship, embodying the dynamic, ever-evolving, and transformative nature of both.

It is in this truth that lies the power of art and its maker to forge new boundaries while dismantling old conventions. However, it is only through collective action that this potential is fully realized—when communities come together to challenge established norms, spark meaningful change, and cultivate a shared vision. Through such collective effort, art transcends the canvas and the artist transforms into an advocate.

Projekt Kapitolyo is a bold collective initiative rooted in the enduring tradition of using art as a tool for social change. In collaboration with Shades of Pink Philippine Foundation, this exhibit is part of a broader advocacy for women’s health, with a particular focus on raising awareness about breast cancer, promoting prevention, supporting and empowering those affected by the disease. This year-end exhibit marks the start of an annual tradition at Kapitolyo Art Space, one that highlights art’s role as a catalyst for meaningful change.

The exhibit features 101 artists, with the participation of Junyee, Pandy Aviado, Red Mansueto, Eghai Roxas, Kitty Taniguchi, Gig De Pio, Hermisanto, Arnel Borja, Reymond L. Fernandez, Sio Montera, Pen Medina, and Danni Sollesta.

The exhibit opened December 12, 2024, and runs until January 12, 2025 in Kapitolyo Art Space. Located at 21 West Capitol Drive, Kapitolyo, Pasig (Open Daily from 10 am until 7 pm).
