Philipp Ines is a full time visual artist from Bacoor Cavite, a UP Diliman College of Fine Arts graduate and a father of two. He grew up in the town of Cabugao, Ilocos Sur, surrounded by mountains and rice fields, which played an integral part and influence on his art today.
Philipp’s creative process starts by spending time tending his garden; that is where his ideas and inspiration naturally come from, that will soon transpire and become the subject of his oil paintings and creations. Aside from nature, he also gets his inspiration from the works of Henri Rousseau, a French post-impressionist painter.
Developing and improving one’s skill takes time and a continuous process. It was not easy for Philipp to hone his’ as he encountered several challenges, as well as discoveries along the way. But he attest that exploring and giving oneself enough time to develop one’s skill and creativity, is the best teacher there is.
I asked Philipp for the best advice he received. “Don’t give up.” Those three words, I guess, resonate with us all. At these troubling times, we tend to fall short of our goals and let circumstances dictate our actions. It is always easier to give up than to keep on trying; And this seems to be timely advice.
“Ang isang artist para sakin ay patuloy lang ang paglikha. Dadating ang tamang timing at panahon. Keep learning at matuto sa pag kritiko ng iba dahil diyan ka gagaling.” (For me, an artist should keep on creating art. The right time will come. Keep learning and accept other people’s criticisms because that will eventually help you to do better.)
Philipp gets his motivation from his family and the community he has with the Pinto family. The inspiration and confidence he gets from them are more than enough to keep him going. People describe Philipp’s work as ‘healing’ and has a feel good energy that surrounds it.
Is Art Important to society? For Philipp, it definitely is. “Sakin napakahalaga nito. Isang paraan para mas madaling maihatid ang mga adbokasiya na pinaniniwalaan ng isang artist sa pamamagitan ng sining. Kagaya ng aking mga likha ngayon, ito ay tumutukoy at naghihikayat sa mga tao na alagaan at mahalin ang kalikasan. Isang magandang praktis din ito sa bawat alagad ng sining ang pag voice out ng kanilang karapatan sa lipunan sa pamamagitan ng kanilang obra.” (Art gives the artist an opportunity to convey one’s advocacy and message across their audience. Just like my art, these pieces describe and encourage people to care and love nature. This is also a great platform for every artist to voice out their rights in the society with the use of their art.)
