Two Nations, One Fashion Show : A PH – INDO Cultural Tie

The Indonesian Embassy in Manila, in partnership with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), commemorated the 75th anniversary of Philippines–Indonesia diplomatic relations with Two Nations, One Fashion,  an extraordinary fashion event held at Whitespace Manila, Makati City, on Friday, November 22.

In a continuing effort to strengthen the countries ‘ bond seventy five years after the Republic of the Philippines (PH) and the Republic of Indonesia (IND) penned diplomatic relations in November 1949, both countries engaged in state visits and events, following several agreements entered into by the nations that mainly tackle boarder management. 

The Two Nations One Fashion event is part of the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding on Cultural Cooperation between the National Commission for Culture and the Arts of the Republic of the Philippines and the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia this year. Leading the Indonesian delegation is Indonesian Ambassador to the Philippines Agus Widjojo, who also gave his welcoming remarks.

The showcase featured a fusion of Filipino and Indonesian artistry. Renowned Filipino designer Renee M. Salud presented creations that blended traditional Filipino silhouettes with Indonesian textiles, including Batik, Tenun Ikat, and Songket. Indonesian designer Merdi Sihombing, known for his innovative use of Ulos, a traditional woven fabric from North Sumatra, opened the runway with a captivating collection. 

Adding to the cultural spectacle, the Adicipta Paundrakarna Production Indonesian Dance Company and the Bayanihan Philippine National Folk Dance Company performed traditional dances from both nations. The evening concluded with a performance by the UST Singers, who accompanied the finale walk featuring Salud, Sihombing, and their models.

Guests were also treated to a culinary experience that highlighted Filipino and Indonesian cuisines, symbolizing the rich and diverse cultural exchange between the two countries.
