Sunshine Plata

Born on January 12, 1980, a BS Psychology graduate, Second among 4 siblings, Sunshine Plata quits her job from teaching to paint full time around April 2007.

As a child, she loves to look at picture story books and tries to copy the characters thru sketches that helped her developed her skill. When she was around 14 to 16 years old, she widens her craft by joining art clubs in school that made her exposed to other mediums and techniques in painting. That time, she doesn’t have enough money to buy a complete set to continue her passion for painting.

But then, she saw a 19th century signature displayed in the Ripley’s Museum in Shangrila Mall. She saw an artist that used coffee as his signature. That thought never left her since then.

In college, she took Psychology in respect to her father’s wishes but painting is still her first love. Though in her second year she wishes to shift to Fine Arts, her father did not approve so she finished her degree in Psychology. Still, this doesn’t hinder our talented artist to pursue her dream. Year 2000, she did her first painting using coffee when she drew the UST Building.

After graduation, she worked in a corporate setting and even pursues teaching but by 2007, she decided to quit her job and pursue to reach her dream, to have her own one-man-show exhibit on her birthday, January 2008.

January 12, 2008, her First Solo Exhibit was held entitled “L.S.D. Trip by Caffeine”. Out of 32 paintings that was displayed, only 7 artworks are left. There is an artwork in her exhibit that doesn’t have glass in it so that people will have the chance to smell the artwork to prove that it is made of pure coffee. Her inspiration – wing creatures such as fairies…

Her work is now a phenomenon. Ripley’s Believe it or not even purchased two of her artworks that was featured in the Martha Stewart show in the U.S.

“When I thought of painting, I didn’t realize that my medium will be a point of interest to other people.” says Sunshine. “The result of the exhibit was overwhelming and it’s more than I expected. Right now, I want to share what I know to others, especially to children.”

Sunshine Plata will have an upcoming 2nd one-woman-show exhibit by July 2008. (venue and exact date to be announced). She is planning to conduct free workshops to children throughout her exhibit. They are aiming for cancer patients and abused children to be given this opportunity to have the free workshop. At the moment, they are looking for sponsors for the materials that will be used to be provided for the children.

“For the Filipino youth, there’s a book…. dream and your dreams will fall short…it says... You can dream, but you should include God in the picture. Like make your talents glorify God and after that, your dreams will fall short, meaning what you dreamed of will be something greater. Just like what happened to me… because I dream, it’s now pouring back on me enormously. I think there are many Filipino talents and achievers that are still yet to be discovered and will do better than I did. They just need to be supported and believed in.” cited Sunshine.
