Cherrie Marie Ipapo wins the Gold Medal in the Open Group Category

The South Sea Pearl Consortium invited professionals and student Jewelry Designers across the globe to be part of their 8th International South Sea Pearl Jewellery Design Competition.

Its goal has remained unchanged since its inception: to highlight the beauty and uniqueness of the South Sea pearl and help design talents from all over the world gain recognition for their creative flair. Thus, all Open Group entries must include the South Sea pearl as the major design element in one of the following six categories: Brooch, Earrings, Necklace/Pendant, Ring, Bracelet and Others.

Confidently, Cherrie Marie Ipapo, an Architech by profession and a Jewelry designer by heart entered her design in this competition entitled ‘UNWRAPPED’ that bagged the Gold Medal in the Open Group category.

“Unwrapped” is a glorious collection…an elegant and stylish accent that can be worn with semi formal attire to startling casual fashion.

A one-of-a-kind Wrap bangle in combination of  yellow gold, white gold and Philippine Ebony hardwood (Kamagong). With the south sea pearl in the center as the nucleus, it binds and symbolizes all God’s given gift to nature for use of mankind.

The diamond, gold and the pearl acting as precious elements in the design, will not be completely gorgeous if  without the use of another distinctive element which is nature’s gift – the Ebony.  “I had infused awareness and acted to protect our wood resources and conserve our forest.  The use of recycled wood and how I managed to  infuse this rare find perfectly to my masterpiece is my contribution to the earth, and simply my way of thanking our creator for giving me great hands for quality craftsmanship and astonishing creations.” Cited Cherrie.

All materials used were assembled and produced in the Philippines.

This was actually Cherrie’s second time to participate in this competition. The first time was in 2008 where her work ‘Entangled’ were one of the Finalist and was given a Certificate of Recognition for Exemplary Design.

The 8th International South Sea Pearl Jewelry Design Competition was part of the ongoing Hong Kong International Jewelry Competition (HKIJS) which started Sept. 2010 wherein participants submitted Design Drawing Entries. Finalists were then announced last October 2010 and gave the designers two (2) months to manufacture the actual piece. The winners were then announced last January 2011 and presented the Prizes during the HongKong Jewelry Fair last March 7, 2011. This event was organized by the South Sea Pearl Consortium (SSPC) and sponsored by the Hongkong Trade Development Council (HKTDC).

“Filipinos are very artistic & with excellent craftsmanship, we can really compete with the international market and I believe given support by the government, our exporting can really boom.” Cited Cherrie.

She received a Trophy and a plaque of recognition for being the Gold Awardee.
