Kasuotang Pilipino – Philippine’s national costume like the Barong and Baro’t Saya, is occasionally used at this time. Usually used by city officials, or as a dress code during weddings and other special occasions, But you can see a collection of it during the yearly Kasuotang Pilipino exhibit held in the Museo ng Makati (Makati Museum).
September is the national costumes month and the city of Makati celebrates this by putting up an exhibit comprises of the city’s residents’ collections. This exhibit has been going on in Makati for ten years. Every year, they feature different themes depending on the contributor and available materials. This year, they featured a collection of revolutionary costumes lend to them by Engr. Perry Javier who was a resident of Brgy. Singkamas himself combined with old baro’t saya and T’boli costumes contributed to the museum. Also, you can see in the exhibit, (which can be found in the second floor of the museum) are uniforms of Philippine Military men and clothes worn by our National hero thru a miniature diorama. Extensive research and study was done by Engr. Javier for this project. The exhibit will only be available for public viewing for a month (September 15 – October 5, 2007) The Museum building itself is full of history. It used to be the old town hall of Makati. It was used as office of past administrators. Mr. Maximo Estrella was the last mayor who hold office there in 1956. Then, the building was transformed into a public library, that eventually turned into a hospital. After which, the building became idle for around 3 years, but Mayor Binay saw the potential of the place in 1988 and made an ordinance in 1990 to restore the old town hall and convert it into a museum. There are few houses left in the area that they call “Bahay Bato” (like the museum) where the ground floor of the house is made of concrete and while the second floor is made of wood and ‘tisa’. When you visit the Museo ng Makati, you will be able to see photographs of old and present Makati, Manila Wares exhibit, Filipiniana and antique books, old porcelain chocolate cups, primitive flat irons, World War II photographs and emergency currencies used during the War and old Peso bills, Mural Painting by Egai Fernandez and pre-historic animal teeth found in Makati. |
