The 35th edition of the International Bamboo Organ Festival that will be held from February 18 to 24, 2009, will feature several musical masterpieces from various periods.  JS Bach’s Cantata no. 130 and John Rutter’s Mass of the Children will the highlight of the opening Gala Concert.


PROGRAM

Thursday, February 18
GALA CONCERT (Invitational)

To celebrate its 35th anniversary, the Festival will feature JS Bach’s Cantata BWV 130 (Lord God, we all praise Thee), one of the four cantatas composed for the feast of St. Michael and All Angels, from the second cycle of cantatas written in Leipzig.  Also to be performed – for the first time in the country – will be John Rutter’s Mass for the Children, composed in 2003.  Featured performers will be the Las Pinas Boys Choir, UP Singing Ambassadors, soloists Karina Gay Balajadia-Liggayu, Mark Anthony Carpio, Ervin Notes Lumauag, and Noel Azcona, accompanied by the Festival Orchestra led by Eudenice Palaruan.  Organists for the evening will be Guy Bovet (Switzerland) and Alejandro Consolacion II (Philippines).

Friday, February 19
AN EVENING OF ORGAN MUSIC

While the Bamboo Organ is played every night of the Festival, one concert is specially dedicated to organ music, performed on both the Bamboo Organ in the church and the larger contemporary instrument in the school auditorium.  Guest artist this year is long-time friend of Las Pinas and frequent visitor Guy Bovet from Switzerland, who is recognized as one of the world’s authorities on Spanish organs and organ music in general.  He will be playing a varied program of organ compositions from different periods.   

Saturday, February 20
CONCERT UNDER THE TREES

The Festival traditionally sets aside one evening less serious musical fare performed by noted popular artists in the inner courtyard of the church - one of the best attended events of the series.  Featured this year are the Morriz Wind Orchestra led by Arnel Feliciano, the Singing Priests from Aklan, and the Philippine newest pop diva and GMA-7 2007 Pinoy Pop Superstar Grand Champion Ms. Maricris Garcia.

Sunday, February 21
ORGAN AND TRUMPET

Another guest organist from Europe, Jarek Malanowicz from the Czech Republic will be sharing the spotlight with Filipino trumpet player Robert de Pano for this concert.  Together they will perform a program of compositions from the Baroque era.  


Tuesday, February 23
SARING LAHI

The concert that started out as a yearly parish celebration has taken on new life as an evening dedicated to Filipino compositions.  The evening will feature Samuel by National Artist for Music Lucio D. San Pedro, which is commissioned by the CCP and the National Competition for Young Artists for the Manila Children’s Choir, the Misa “Inmaculada” by Fr. Domingo Carceller, OAR and a new Organ Concerto entitled Divertimento for Organ and Orchestra by Alejandro Consolacion II, composer and organist who is closely associated with the Festival is also on the program.  Featured artists are the Las Pinas Boys Choir, boy soprano Bernard Caro, tenor Ervin Notes Lumauag, baritone, Jonaf del Fierro and Noel Azcona, bass, organists Armando Salarza and Rea L. Jimenez, and the Festival Orchestra under the baton of Eudenice Palaruan. The Kasilag Trio made up of guitarists Benchito Carino, Edgardo de Dios and Phil Valdez will also be performing.

Wednesday, February 24
BACH AND RUTTER   

The program of the opening Gala concert will be repeated this evening with the same performers, save for the guest organist, who will be Jarek Malanowicz.  Part I will remain  Bach’s Cantata BWV 130 ( Lord God, we all praise Thee) and Part II Rutter’s Mass Of the Children.
