February 19 – 27, 2009
Thursday, Feb. 19, Gala Concert, invitational Friday, Feb. 20 EXSULTATE
The 34th edition of the International Bamboo Organ Festival celebrates several important events in the music world. In 2009 we mark the 200th death anniversary of Franz Joseph Haydn with a performance of his Great Organ Mass in E flat major; the 200th birthday of Felix Mendelssohn with his Motets, op. 39, nos. 1, 2 and 3; and the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Las Pinas Boys Choir, main performers in tonight’s concert. Other artists will be organist Christian Iwan and soprano Franziska Hammer-Drexel both from Austria; Philippine singers Mark Anthony Carpio, counter-tenor; Ervin Notes Lumauag, tenor; and Eudenice Palaruan, baritone; Alejandro Consolacion II, organ; and the Festival Orchestra, all under the baton of conductor Armando Salarza.
Saturday, Feb. 21 CONCERT UNDER THE TREES
The Festival traditionally sets aside one evening for less serious musical fare. This open- air concert is performed by noted popular artists in the inner courtyard of the church, and is one of the best-attended evenings in the festival. This year’s featured artist is Rivermaya, one of the country’s leading pop-rock bands.
Sunday, Feb. 22 AN EVENING OF ORGAN MUSIC
While the Bamboo Organ is played every night of the Festival, one evening is specially reserved only for organ music, to be played on both the Bamboo Organ in the church and on the more contemporary instrument in the school auditorium. Our guest artist is Christian Iwan of Austria in a program of pieces by various composers. He is resident organist of the Cathedral in Eisenstadt, Austria, where the composer Franz Joseph Haydn, whose 200th death anniversary we observe this year, once worked.
Tuesday, Feb. 24 PHILIPPINE – KOREAN FRIENDSHIP NIGHT
An evening featuring artists from Korea - organist Yang-Hee Yun and baritone Seong-Kyu Lim - will commemorate the 60th year of Philippine-Korean Friendship and Cooperation. Theirs is a program of Baroque organ solo music plus pieces for voice by varied composers with organ accompaniment. Sharing the concert stage will be the AILM Chorale conducted by Joshibiah de Juan. This concert is made possible by the 60th Anniversary of Philippine-Korean Diplomatic Relations Committee chaired by Ambassador Joong Kyung Choi and co-chaired by Mr. Hyun Mo Park, founder and chairman of the Filipino-Korean Cultural Foundation, Inc.
Wednesday, Feb. 25 PAGPUPUGAY
Works composed by National Artists Lucrecia Kasilag and Lucio San Pedro will highlight the concert that used to go by the title Fiesta Musika, an evening dedicated to Filipino composers. Composer-organist Alejandro Consolacion II will premier his newest composition Filipiniana Two, a suite for organ and oboe, the latter to be played by Franz Ramirez. Featured music ensembles are the UE Chorale and the Celso Espejo Rondalla.
Thursday, Feb. 26 Friday, Feb. 27 LAUDA
The 250th death anniversary of George Frideric Handel will be commemorated this evening with a performance of his Laudate Pueri and Organ Concertos Op. 4 no. 6 in B flat major and Op. 4 no 4 in F major. Mozart’s famous Exsultate Jubilate will also be performed.
