Tipano Band of PalawanWhat is “Tipano”? Tipano is a Cuyonon native instrumental music. Made up of bamboo flutes open at one end, one hole for a mouthpiece and six holes for the melodic tones. These are of three sizes, the smallest size about 1 ½ centimeters in diameter and a foot long, which plays the melody or primera. The second size is about two centimeters in diameter, 1 ¼ foot long, which plays the segunda or alto. The third size is about 2 ½ centimeter in diameter, 1 ½ foot long which plays the bass or bajo. These are accompanied by the redoblante or snare drums, the tambor or bass drums.

This kind of music is played during fiestas to accompany religious songs. This is also used to accompany the patron saint San Agustin during the procession.

There were Tipano players back in the 80s that perform in Nayong Pilipino. But when it closed down, the group was then dissolved. But one of its former member, Jun Bundal, suggested to form a new group which was then supported by Governor Joel Reyes.

The Provincial Culture and Arts Office (PCAO) then head to Magsaysay and Cuyo where Tipano originated and is still widely used by the locals to hold its auditions. “We are looking for people who are skilled to play Tipano and at the same time, a person who has a heart and love for the music” cited Ms. Charina Cabading, PCAO Executive Director.

After carefully choosing its new members, the Tipano Band was formally complete last March 2009 which are made up of 11 members that ranges from 14 to 18 years of age. The members undergo intensive training of about 3-4 hours everyday. Jun Bundal and Larry Magnaye are the people in charge of the training, while Victor Guzman is in charge of choreography, expressions, costumes and stage presence of the members.

Discipline and loneliness are some of the challenges these members have to go thru. To be far from their families is one of the sacrifices they have to face for the love of the craft. Thru these difficulties, the members learn to work together and focus on their trainings and education. It is also because of these that urges these youngsters to compose their own songs which the group includes in their repertoire.

Tipano Band was born mainly to preserve, enrich, and promote the culture and heritage of Palawan. To be able to perform and give justice to the craft is what they aim for. Not to mention, the effect they have to this generation renewing the pride and culture of their fellow Palawenos.

Being a member of the Tipano Band, the children then have the chance to develop their personality, boost their self confidence, and uplift their pride towards their talent and their culture.

The Tipano Band conducts workshops, accepts invites and performances outside Palawan.
