“Sadyang malikhain ang mga pinoy!” The craftsmanship and ingenuity of a Filipino still surprises me. The extent of what a person can do in spite of their work, hardship and status in life.
During an event in Cebu, we came across a man named Teodorico Constante, or also known as “Tata” or “Tatski”; a person who makes his living as a geodetic surveyor, a part time masseur or “manghihilot” , and an avid fan of motorbikes.
His deep fascination with motorbikes is not what caught our attention. When he was introduced to us by Jerry Sires, another motorbike lover, we were informed that his bike is one of its kind. So by the time we arrived to look at Tata’s motorbike, there it was, a stainless, handmade motorbike caught our attention amongst all other motorbikes in the mall parking lot. The design and materials of the body of the bike is truly an attention grabber. From scrap stainless metals to spoons, forks, and gas stove tops, and using only his bared hands with the help of a hammer and screwdriver, Tata was able to made his creation in a year. The motorbike is in good condition and runs up to 6 speed. The metal might be hot when exposed under the sun for sometime, but with a little damp cloth and the wind, the metal will soon cool off and the ride will be smooth as ever. Different as it may seem, it always catches the eye of everyone who sees it, wondering who the creative artist could be behind this craft. There had been two offers given to Tata by foreigners that would like to buy his bike, but Tata hesitated because he wants to keep the bike as a souvenir of his hard work. Given the opportunity and finances to back him up, he would like to created a few other units such as the one he has. But he is eyeing to make, the first ever hand made motor bike to be able to run on land and water alike. |
