Hand woven bags from the Philippines is a must have for everyone. It is stylish, unique, strong and colorful. Each bag is prepared and woven with care, a touch of art and a glimpse of the Filipino culture. This tradition is handed down from generation to generation making it a family affair. Just like these bags that are made from dried Pandan leaves (Pandanus).
Pandan leaves are usually used in cooking to add a distinct aroma to rice, curry and other desserts. But in the province of Negros Occidental, a group of women with the help of the Agrarian Reform Community (ARC), they were able to make something more out of it. After harvesting Pandan leaves, they let it dry, and then wove it using their own hands. They even dye some of the leaves to add color to the design. Approximately around 100 families in 2 barangays (village) are involved in this craft and serve as the means of livelihood in the area. According to Ms. Mila Flores, the Provincial Marketing Officer of Negros Occidental said: “Negros Occidental produces the best Hand woven pandan bags because it is flexible, softer and smoother compared to the produce of other regions.” Their group was able to export these bags to Guam, Cebu and other parts of the Philippines in a weekly basis.
