Active ImageBarong is the National costume of the Filipinos. It was worn by our great grandparents, as everyday clothes, but the design and material vary on the individual’s financial capability and status in the society. As constant as change, some people nowadays wear barongs for work and are a favorite during weddings, special events and occasions. Due to technology, machines where created to make barongs faster, easier and cheaper. But still, nothing can beat the old fashion way, where careful handling, weaving and artistic design produces the best in a barong. And it can only be found in Laguna.

Laguna takes pride to their talent and abounding natural resources surrounding the region.  They have the best tourist attractions like the Pagsanjan Falls, Caliraya Lake, Hot Springs in Calamba, and the Rizal shrine where the Philippine National Hero, Doctor Jose Rizal was born. But aside from that, Laguna has still much to offer. The craftsmanship of its people had earned acknowledgements, awards and its popularity kept on growing among tourists and locals alike. One of them, is the Hand Made Barong made in Lumban, Laguna.

There are many types of Barong: there is the Gusot Mayaman, Usi and the Pinya. But whatever kind of material you choose, LEA (Lumban Embroidery Association) will be able to provide you the best Barongs you can find. With a style, design and size suited to your needs, LEA have enough skilled sewers, embroiders and artists to produce One (1) or more barongs. This is a skill every student need to learn in school, for embroidery and barong making is part of their education. This skill will continue to grow and be passed on from generation to generation making Laguna proud to have them in the region.

Active ImageTo make One (1) Barong, the process have to go through at least five (5) people to finish. One will make the lining, where one will make the embroidery, after which they will wash the cloth and stretch it, so it doesn’t need ironing. Hand painting the barong takes at least a day to finish before handing it to the sewer. It’s hard work but the end result is breath taking.

The prices vary depending on your desired design of the embroidery or painting, material and size.  If you get tired of the traditional color of the barong, you can always bring it back to Lumban and have them dyed to your preferred color.
